Shirley Ann Edgerton is a visionary leader, activist, mentor, and advocate whose lifelong commitment to youth development and community empowerment has made a lasting impact in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, and beyond. As the Founder of the Rites of Passage and Empowerment (R.O.P.E.) Program, she has created a transformative space for young women and individuals who identify as female or non-binary to explore identity, build self-worth, develop leadership skills, and recognize their potential.

With more than 30 years of experience in civic engagement and social services, Shirley has built a career centered on education, cultural competency, mentorship, and service. Her professional journey began in state government, where she spent more than two decades managing residential programs, overseeing staff, and supporting young people through social service initiatives. Shirley later became the first Cultural Proficiency Coach for Pittsfield Public Schools. Beyond government and education, Shirley served as the founding Director of Youth Alive, an arts-based program that uses step, dance, and drumming to engage young people. Her work with Youth Alive helped establish the foundation for R.O.P.E., which has developed into a year-round mentoring program focused on holistic development. For Shirley, the impact of R.O.P.E. is perhaps best reflected in the accomplishments of its alumni. She considers the alumni pool one of her greatest sources of pride, particularly when she sees young people who once questioned whether they had the ability or financial capacity to attend college ultimately become college graduates.

Several R.O.P.E. alumni have gone on to hold important positions within Berkshire County, including leadership roles at the airport in Pittsfield and Berkshire County Head Start. Seeing these former participants accomplish their goals is what continues to motivate Shirley.

“There’s no greater joy for me than to just witness them when they have accomplished and met their goals,” Shirley reflects. For her, these achievements represent the greatest measure of the program’s success.

Shirley identifies pursuing one’s passions as some of the best career advice she has received. Her own professional path was shaped by an early interest in community involvement and youth development. She began volunteering as an adolescent, and those experiences ultimately informed the career choices she made throughout her life.

She encourages young women entering the nonprofit and social service fields to similarly explore their interests through internships, travel, and other opportunities that can help them discover their passions and purpose. She also emphasizes the importance of mentorship, encouraging young women to find mentors who can share their wisdom, knowledge, and experiences. Once they have refined their focus, Shirley recommends developing a career plan and beginning the journey of serving others through the nonprofit arena.

While Shirley remains optimistic about the ability of young people to create meaningful change, she is also deeply concerned about the challenges facing nonprofits today, particularly uncertainty surrounding government funding. She believes these challenges can have significant consequences for programs serving communities that already face substantial barriers.

She is especially attentive to the needs of families who are unhoused or struggling to meet basic needs and stresses the importance of ensuring that vulnerable members of the community remain a priority both locally and nationally. At the heart of her concerns is a commitment to ensuring that young people have access to the educational and developmental resources necessary to become self-sufficient and productive citizens.

Education remains central to that mission. Shirley believes that the educational component of a holistic organization is an important vehicle for helping young people reach their potential.

Shirley graduated from Herbert Lehman College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and earned a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. Her decades of service have earned her numerous honors, including the MassArt Common Good Award and community leadership recognition from organizations such as the NAACP. She has also received honorary doctorates recognizing her contributions to youth, education, and community service.
