‘Busan Syndrome’ Gains Visibility as Busan, South Korea, Opens Citywide Night Festa

The program, organized by Busan Metropolitan City and the Busan Tourism Organization, begins its main season on August 29th with the Busan Night Walk, an overnight walking event for up to 6,000 participants. Night Festa runs through December, with most programs offered free of charge.

The launch comes as Busan is receiving broader attention from overseas travelers. In parts of Asia, the informal phrase “Busan Syndrome” has been used in social media posts, blogs and travel coverage to describe the feeling of missing Busan after a trip and wanting to return. The phrase has gained visibility among younger travelers from markets including Taiwan and Japan, where repeat travel to Korea and short-haul city breaks remain strong.

City officials view the trend as part of a wider shift in how international visitors experience Busan. Rather than focusing only on daytime sightseeing, more travelers are building itineraries around evening activities, food, coastal scenery and neighborhood-based experiences that are easy to share online.

According to Busan Metropolitan City, international arrivals to Busan are continuing to grow, with overseas visitation up 43.9 percent from a year earlier. Arrivals from the United States increased 76.4 percent, and the city expects total international arrivals to reach 4 million this year. Busan is about 2.5 hours from Seoul by KTX high-speed rail and is served by Gimhae International Airport, which offers direct flights from major cities across Asia.

Busan’s nighttime tourism programming builds on travel patterns already visible among foreign visitors. In recent tourism data, international travelers cited nature and food as leading reasons for choosing Busan. These factors are closely tied to the city’s geography. The first major event, Busan Night Walk, offers courses of 5, 10, 15 and 26 miles (8, 16, 24 and 42 km). The routes pass through coastal and urban areas, giving participants a way to experience the city on foot after dark.

In September, Night Festa moves to Dadaepo Beach on Busan’s western coast, where three weekends of outdoor picnic concerts will be held near one of the city’s best-known sunset locations. The program includes music, pet-friendly seating areas and wellness activities, positioning the beach as an evening gathering place rather than just a daytime destination.

From late September through mid-October, the festival shifts inland to Hwamyeong Lotus Park along the Nakdong River. A night market will feature food trucks, craft booths, flea markets and wellness programs. A traditional liquor pop-up will introduce visitors to a variety of traditional liquors and makgeolli from Busan. The format reflects Korea’s casual outdoor evening culture, where food, drinks and conversation are shared in open-air settings.

The program also brings regular activity to downtown Busan. Twice a month from August through December, the Balcony Music Show will take place on Gwangbok-ro, a central commercial street near local markets, shops and street food vendors. The series includes live performances, parade floats, flea markets and hands-on booths. A larger Street Festa will close the season on December 5th.

In Haeundae, one of Busan’s most visited coastal districts, a dinner yacht cruise will operate every Friday and Saturday through the end of the year with advance reservations, giving visitors a nighttime view of the city from the water.
