Kim Habibi Hosting Backyard BBQ Next Summer For Local Children's Club

Kim Habibi is in early plans to host a backyard barbeque for the kids of the local children's club. With months to plan, Habibi is hoping to schedule a significant and unique event.

But rather than making the event just about serving food to children, Habibi wants to make it unique for the adults too. That's why she is planning for local BBQ businesses to take part in a competition between the pit masters.

Habibi says the idea would get some of the more prominent BBQ restaurants in the area to cater the event for the children while gaining attention around the city. It's a win-win situation for everyone involved.

"The event caters to the children of the club," explains Habibi. "They get to come out and have fun, enjoy great food and the sunshine. But having some of the best BBQ joints in the area serve them will be great."

There are plenty of local parks in the area big enough to host an event of Habibi's size. Most BBQ restaurants in the area have food trucks. This fact means more businesses can compete and have their kitchen to use on the venue's grounds.

While the children eat some of the best BBQ in town, the businesses will compete for different awards and prizes. Also, the competition will bring out adults to try some food and judge which business is the winner for respective categories. A percentage of the sales will go towards the children's club, and the winner takes home winnings as well.

Also, the children will be able to take part in different games and activities at the park. From ball and bucket toss to turtle races to floating duck pond, the boys and girls will earn prizes during the day. Plus, Habibi hopes a dunk tank provides more fun for the adults and children. All of these games and their funds will go back to the children's club.

Habibi has spoken with the local children's club about hosting the event, and they are more than happy about the idea.

"The event still is in early planning," says Habibi. "But the reception I have received all points to the BBQ party happening in the summer."

Because of the large gathering, Habibi needs to iron out logistics of the event. This aspect means renting large tents, tables, chairs, and other means of aiding the day will have to be planned well in advance. But Habibi hopes to gain the help of local businesses and provide vendor stations to attract more funds for the cause.

"I plan on selling sponsorship tables and vendor tents to businesses," explains Habibi. "The additional funds go directly to the club, and the vendors will have plenty of foot traffic to sell goods."

Another reason why Habibi plans to have this event is the lack of similar activities in the area. Others cater to the adults, but not many are for children.

"The children's club will have a fun time during the day," says Habibi. "That does not mean other children can come out and enjoy what we offer. But all funds will go to the children's club and help with funding their projects."

The projects Habibi mentions is buying equipment that club needs year-round. Plus, Habibi hopes enough money becomes raised so the organization can purchase a new bus for traveling. The old transport bus continually needs repair, and the new coach would handle a headache the club has faced all year.

"If we raise enough money for the club to buy a new bus, I would be enthusiastic," says Habibi.

That's why Mary Ann Benigno is in early planning to host her own community classic car show in the spring.

"When the weather warms up, people will start to be more out and about," says Benigno. "No better time to use the advantage of warmer weather to see some great cars, and raise money for a great cause."

Although it can involve plenty of time and effort to plan an event of this size, Benigno is ready for the challenge. The driving force behind her determination is assisting a local charity. Also, planning a car show to benefit a good cause should not have to be complicated.

"With proper planning and support from the community of loyal residents, I hope to put on an extraordinary event," proclaims Benigno.

While she may not be able to convince Ford or Chevy to donate a vehicle to raffle off, there will be neat prizes. But the main attraction of the program will be the classic cars parked in the lot for showing.

Benigno says there are already similar events in the area. This information is helpful for her because she knows plenty of classic cars will show up on the day of the gathering.

"I've talked to some of the classic car owners, and they are extremely excited about helping a good cause and bringing their cars out," says Benigno.

As far as location goes, Benigno believes the large parking lot in the center of town will hold cars, vendors, and the massive audience. She will then have to work with the city about permits and what the regulations precisely are. She believes the city will be behind the cause since it is helping charities.

Benigno knows not everyone is a lover of classic cars. Because of this fact, other forms of entertainment will be taking place on the same lot.

"I plan on having live bands perform, and setting up vendor tents for games and food," explains Benigno. "The little ones will be capable of running around and having fun while the adults enjoy the cars."

Just having the coolest cars in one place won't be enough. Benigno knows this event is strictly for raising money. Attendees and car owners will know this right off the bat when they inquire about the car show.

"The local car clubs have held fundraisers before on their own," states Benigno. "I do plan on asking for their assistance in promotion and spreading the word."

Benigno has yet to decide on which charity will benefit from the car show. She admits more than one could split the money, helping more children and organizations.

"I want a charity that helps children to benefit from the funds we raise," says Benigno. "Also, I know a few local organizations need assistance. The money will be going towards worthy causes."

She also mentions that this could turn into a monthly occurrence if the crowd is big enough. Like other car shows and gatherings, the event could become a tradition in the community.

"Ideally, I would love for this to happen frequently," says Benigno. "Becoming a regular event in the community, and each event raises money for a different charity is the ultimate plan."

Finally, classic car shows connect families and members of the community. The event gives a reason for people to go out and interact with other residents.

"New friendships can form, and families get to know each other," concludes Benigno. "And in the end, money becomes available for people in need."

The non-profit organization at which she has been Executive Director for about six years nurtures people with connections—and a great dose of hope.

“When people come to us,” she says, “they are at their lowest point. They no longer trust authority figures. They think they’ll never get that job or that apartment. Give them a glimmer of hope, and it turns things around.” Hennum says the nurturing that sets Village of Hope apart, helps people to believe in themselves, discover their personal power, and know that they deserve a great life. “We help them realize they can have a powerful future.”

Everything that the organization does is focused on its mission: to stem the tide of homelessness, especially to prevent the child of a homeless family from becoming homeless himself one day. “We do everything possible to ensure we only see a child one time.”

A passion to do something about the homeless situation led to the establishment of the organization back in 1983. From then until 2011, Village of Hope served both individuals and families, but realized having everyone all mixed up wasn’t the best model. “Families have unique needs” Hennum says, and adds that families are the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population. Village of Hope offers an intergenerational approach, focusing not on the child or the adult, but the family unit. They house about 55 families each year.

The non-profit organization offers the family on-site classes as well as three meals a day, snacks, and an apartment in the stunning, special building that was built in 2011. They try to locate affordable housing for the families. They provide some classes that are found elsewhere, like budgeting or resume preparation. They also do something differently: here, a Parent-Child Educator works with each child, some as young as three. The goal is to build a relationship and get the family to find hope in their situation.

“If you ask a homeless child what they want to be when they grow up, they won’t have an answer,” Hennum says. This is something they were never asked before, never thought about. Village of Hope gives them a future to think about.

And their efforts are working. The recidivism rate is improving. And Sandy Hennum couldn’t have been prouder than when a one-time client became a peer! The young woman had discovered her passion while a resident, and established her own organization to support young mothers and babies. She recently came by to learn about different processes and protocols used at Village of Hope, so she could integrate them in her new program.

Village of Hope also forges partnerships with other non-profit organizations, and that element of connection is a big differentiator for the organization.
