What Lies Beneath: the Mystery of Coronavirus and Shincheonji-phobia

Over 500 church members of Shincheonji (SCJ) tested positive for the virus and have become the target of scapegoating and blame.

NEW YORK, NY, USA, February 29, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — The rapid proliferation of the coronavirus (COVID-19) resulted in 13 deaths and 2,022 confirmed cases as of February 28 2020 in South Korea. While the cause and solution of the infection have not been identified, over 500 church members of Shincheonji (SCJ) tested positive for the virus and have become the target of scapegoating and blame.

On February 19, South Korean President Moon Jae-In stated that a full survey and diagnosis of Shincheonji members were necessary. On Feb 25, SCJ submitted a list of 210,000 members to health authorities with the condition the personal information of their members remain protected. On 26th, health authorities began telephone surveys and tests on those who showed symptoms.

Chosun Ilbo, a major newspaper in South Korea, reported that 5 people with pneumonia were found positive with the virus according to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters before any Shincheonji member was involved. The medical community noted that the COVID-19 cases had already proliferated before the mass infection of members of the church. This raises doubts on reports echoed by some Western media that patient 31, a female Shincheonji member, had been the main agent spreading the infection throughout the country.

The mass infections focused attention on the Shincheonji Church. Unfortunately, several media reports relied on low-level internet sources and interviews with Christians who regard Shincheonji as a serious competitor and have labeled it a cult.

“Shincheonji members generally do not recognize themselves in reports they read in the media. For instance, they do not regard their founder, Chairman Lee Man Hee, as the second coming of Jesus or as God. Publishing these claims without fact-checking shows media do not do their homework and only relied on bias sources,” said Mr. Kim Shin Chang, General Director of Department of International Relations of Shincheonji Headquarters.
Shincheonji Church is controversial in Korean society. This is mostly due to its rapid growth in the past decade which has occured the at the expense of the politically influential conservative and fundamentalist Christian churches in Korea. Shincheonji’s members exceeded 200,000 in 2018, and this spectacular growth contrasts with the gradual decrease of members in conservative and fundamentalist Christian groups in South Korea, which have been plagued by corruption scandals.

Another example of societal pressure against SCJ was covered by Munwha Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), a leading South Korean television. They reported on February 26th that a female Shincheonji member fell from a window of her house and died as a result of her husband’s violence. The husband tried to coerce her to leave Shincheonji. Before her death, the police received reports of domestic violence.

As confirmed in several reports by Belgian NGO Human Rights Without Frontiers (HRWF), Shincheonji members have been the main target of kidnapping and confinement promoted by pastors with the aim of compelling them to renounce their faith, called forced conversion or deprogramming, resulting in over 1,000 human rights violation cases.

When one of its members died during a coercive conversion attempt, Shincheonji reacted with protest of more than 120,000 Korean citizens in January 2018 to demand justice. The annual 2019 International Religious Freedom Report by the U.S. Department of State mentioned the incident. However, the Korean government did nothing.

When the fact that we belong to Shincheonji becomes known, we are forced to quit our jobs. We cannot send our kids to school. Vulnerable members are exposed to domestic violence. We fear the coronavirus, and we also fear the virus named hatred and insult.” states a member of Shincheonji.

SNIBBLE’S GEN Z SURVEY REVEALS IMPORTANCE OF MOBILE VIDEO SHARING

Video keeps friends in touch by fuelling social media conversations

TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA, February 28, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Snibble Corp, the world’s first premium social video platform, announced today a summary of the key results from its January 2020 survey of US mobile video watching behavior

This report is based on the findings of research conducted by Snibble’s in-house research arm. Snibble surveyed 1,221 mobile video consumers between the ages of 18 and 34 across the U.S., yielding a national sub-sample of 451 18-24 year old respondents. Data was collected online between 17th and 20th January 2020.

Key findings include:

Gen Z blurs the lines between social and entertainment
• As frequent users of both social media and entertainment apps, 73% of Gen Z say they regularly share videos as a way of staying in touch with friends
This means video entertainment doesn’t end with the viewer; its value is extended by sharing and reacting

Most Gen Z mainly use the phone for unplanned entertainment, often opening their phone before they’ve decided what they want to do or watch:
• 61% of Gen Z say “I usually click through different apps or videos to find something that catches my interest”
• 27% say “I usually know precisely what I’m going to watch before I start”
• The remaining 12% “usually open the phone for background when I’m doing other things”
This means there isn’t much appointment viewing on mobile but platforms do have to offer a constantly updated and refreshed menu of video options

Although Gen Z watch a lot of SVOD services, they don’t actually pay for many of them:
When asked which monthly bills they personally pay for entertainment,
• The majority of Gen Z aren’t paying for entertainment.
• The streaming services with the highest Gen Z subscriber rates were:
o Netflix (31% pay for)
o Spotify (30% pay for)
• 16% of 18-24s pay a cable TV bill
• They’re least likely to be paying for Apple TV+ (5%) or YouTube Premium (1%)
This means most Gen Z are used to getting their entertainment for free

Free beats subscription, even if it means watching ads
When asked about new subscription options, 14% of Gen Z were attracted to an ad-free subscription of $8 per month; 17% preferred to pay a $5 per month subscription, even if it came with ads; but a whopping 67% of Gen Z opted, perhaps not surprisingly, for a free service, even if it carries advertising.

This means Gen Z is happy to watch “some” ads in return for entertainment, but not too many

William L. Kovacs is the author of Reform the Kakistocracy. A Greek word, kakistocracy is defined as “rule by the least able or least principled citizens,” and according to Kovacs, a senior level public policy adviser for nearly 50 years, we’re currently living in one.

“Our leaders possess little ability to lead and less principle. They care more about loyalty to political party than loyalty to the Constitution and the people,” says Kovacs. “The fundamental question I ask throughout the entire book is ‘who do these elected representatives actually represent? Very few people in this country are represented by the current political system.”

Reform the Kakistocracy sets forth ideas on how citizens can begin to restructure a massive federal government with uncontrollable debt and decades of undeclared wars.

“Our elected representatives should serve as fiduciaries that give loyalty to the Constitution and the branch of government in which they serve,” says Kovacs. “They take an oath to the Constitution. They take an oath to the office in which they serve. They don’t take an oath to a political party which is nothing more than a group of people organizing to control the nation. Once their loyalty is to the political party and not to the Constitution, they’ve fundamentally changed the Constitution by transferring power from our institutions of government to political parties.”

Part I of the book sets out many actions of our federal government that place the nation at risk. Part II sets forth a series of governance principles, that if adopted, would guide government officials in structuring a government that focuses more on addressing the needs of citizens and less on achieving dominance as political parties. Parts III and IV set forth what Kovacs calls “modest proposals” to restructure the kakistocracy. They are creative but not modest.

“It sounds cynical, but politicians find more benefit in conflict than finding solutions to the issues facing the nation,” Kovacs laments. “They don't work together anymore. They don't even talk to each other. Everything's a fight. In the media, one side has one set of facts and the other has another. You really begin to wonder what's real. Government officials should be telling us the truth, whatever that truth is. Americans need the truth to find the right path forward.”

Part V reminds all of us that the Constitution sets forth a clear and legal path for revolution – voting which allows us to replace the entire government in a short period of time.

SMi Group caught up with conference speaker Stephen Hunt, Professor, UCL, to find out more about his expertise and role in the industry, what he’s looking forward to at this year’s Pain Therapeutics conference, what vital topic he’ll be addressing in his presentation, and much more.

Professor Stephen Hunt received his doctorate in Neuroscience from University College London. From 1980 he was a scientific staff member at the Lab of Molecular Biology in Cambridge but moved back to UCL in 1998 as Professor of Molecular Neuroscience. His research has been concentrated on the relationship between molecules and behaviour particularly around the neurobiology of pain, depression and addiction. Most recently he has been working with Professor Bazbek Davletov and Dr Maria Maiaru leveraging the neurotoxic properties of the botulinum toxin to specifically silence key pain-processing neurons. He was elected a fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2001.

Here is a snapshot of what was discussed:

Can you tell us a little bit about your background in investigating mechanisms of pain?
“I have been studying pain mechanisms -off and on- for the past thirty years both in Cambridge and in London at UCL. My interests initially started with our discovery of rapid molecular changes in the dorsal horn specifically following injury and progressed through a behavioural and molecular analysis of both pain and its co-morbidities such as anxiety and depression.”

Botulinum based treatments are emerging as potential pain therapy, how would you describe where this field is at the moment?
“Botox has been used in the clinic for treatment of neuropathic pain and modest reductions in pain scores were seen in some patients. Davletov and others developed a clever method of deconstructing Botulinum toxin and produced an extended molecule that was analgesic but did not paralyse the neuromuscular junction and was safe to synthesise under normal laboratory conditions. This might prove to be of enormous value when extensive peripheral injections are being planned. They are clearly much safer to use and expand the use of botulinum injections for the control of painful peripheral neuropathies.”
